01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

When you crave the nostalgic aroma of garlic and sizzling beef rising from a tabletop roaster, Daifukuen in Asakusa is an easy address to keep in mind. The unpretentious dining room hums with after-work gatherings and regulars focused on good meat, with chopstick after chopstick reaching over the grill amid the lively haze of barbecue smoke.

A natural opening order is the salted beef tongue (tan-shio). Tossed in a punchy garlic-and-pepper salt marinade with minced scallions, its savory sear alone calls for a cold draft beer or highball. Standing alongside it as a house signature, the premium kalbi features marbled cuts soaked in a savory-sweet dipping sauce, packing the kind of rich depth that makes you want to dig straight into white rice. Both arrive in generous portions that easily live up to expectations.

Beyond standard cuts, the menu features tender premium skirt steak (harami) and premium loin (ro-su), alongside a solid range of offal including crisp, clean-snapping tripe (mino), tender beef intestines (horumon), and grilled liver. Between grilling rounds, light bites such as senmai-sashi (raw omasum), pig's trotters, fresh sanchu lettuce salad, and namul season the meal so the palate never tires. For the finish, hearty soup choices abound, from simmered, rich kalbi soup and spicy taegutan to satisfying oxtail gomtang.

Service is brisk and attentive at the tables. Because the room frequently fills up, reserving ahead for dinner is sensible. Payment is cash only.
